I HEART RODARTE!
January 15, 2010

Meet sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, from Pasadena, California!  Having graduated with liberal arts degrees from University of California, at Berkley in 2001, they then founded their epic company, Rodarte, in 2005.  The fruits of their design labors can be found globally at more than 40 stores, including Nordstrom's, Barney's, Bergdorf's, and Harvey Nichols, and are worn by such trendsetters as Kate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Michelle Obama, Reese Witherspoon, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton and Dita von Teese.  Rodarte has been nominated for, and won, several fashion awards, and is now in tRODARTE Dress @ Targethe permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute and the Fashion Institute of Technology Museum in New York.  Whoah.

The sisters Mulleavy have amassed kudos from fans of fashion to designers alike, and rightly so.  Their creations are ethereal and so unique, I'm spellbound by each creation.  How DO they get it right, everytime? After a collaboration with Gap put their white shirt collection on the May '07 cover of Vogue, Kate and Laura have now ventured into Target territory, and I for one, thank them!  Quite a selection is available at target.com, and the price range is as unique as the designs, being so reasonable I was afraid the fabric would fall apart at first touch.  Soft, touchable, I couldn't stop looking at it.  Rodarte's dresses combine so many eras; this one is like 1950s house dress and floaty ballerina tulle meet Courtney Love femme grunge and Audrey Hepburn bows!  Style it as is, or lady it up with delicate heels.  For a more-defined waistline, add a belt, even tie a ribbon 'round the Rodarte masterpiece!  I believe the sky is the limit for Rodarte, and for $39.99, wouldn't you like to own a part of the solar system?!

BEAUTY A-Z: 'Z' IS FOR 'ZENO'!
May 6, 2009

To put it bluntly, and we may as well with this subject since there are no words to pretty it up, Zeno, is a zit zapper.  There, I said it. Now I will let the folks at MyZeno.com explain their product more in-depth:

"Zeno is a hand-held battery-operated device designed with a tip that heats to a pre-set temperature.  The biocompatible tip is designed for direct contact with a blemish on the skin.  Once in contact with a blemish, the tip will transfer heat into the follicle.  An internal PID controller chip continually modulates the temperature to a fixed range even under different skin and circulation conditions by adjusting the flow of energy to match precisely the heat absorption of the individual user.  Zeno’s microprocessor adapts not only to your individual skin type but also to the heat absorption characteristics of the location of the pimple. Your Zeno adapts to you!  An integral digital timer controls the treatment time.  The level of heat does not cause skin damage."

After researching reader reviews for this product, I'm finding that most are quite satisfied with it.  Some mention that not only does it work for them, but they're relieved at no longer having to apply topical medication, like benzoyl peroxide, to their skin.  Zeno was made for those with mild to moderate inflammatory (not cystic) acne.  Typically, the user applies it to the newish pimple (Zeno doesn't work on full-blown eruptions, or blackheads or whiteheads, so get 'em early and they may never reach these stages!), for 2.5 minutes of heat-activated treatment.  Zits usually disappear in hours after 2 or 3 treatments, rather than days necessary with topical treatments, and Zeno shares none of their side effects.  It's FDA approved and the only side effect it may have (but usually doesn't) is slight, and temporary, redness, right after usage.  Dermatologists recommend Zeno, and on
www.myzeno.com, cost ranges from $129 to $200, with a 30-day money back guarantee and free shipping.  I'm having more acne problems as an adult than I ever did as a teen; Zeno sounds worth looking into!

BEAUTY A-Z: 'Y' IS FOR... 'Y' DON'T U
April 16, 2009

~Make it a habit to slap on an SPF 15 moisturizer before going outside... you know your skin will thank you for it every day, especially in the not-to-distant future!

~Exfoliate your whole self once or twice a week-it helps your moisturizer absorb better and sloughs off dead winter skin cells that make you appear dull...  :)  (unless you have sensitive and/or dry, skin, then play this by ear!)

~Floss daily!  For real!  Even if you didn't enjoy candy binges, the natural bacteria in your mouth forms placque, causing cavities.  Besides being freak'n expensive to fix, bad teeth ruin an otherwise perfect face!

~Keep your cuticles moist!  Cuticle oil around the nail bed helps keep the yukky dry hangnails away, and with a coat of clear polish, you get a mani look without the cost or time involved!  Same for a faux pedi!

~Use your SPF moisturizer (I'm a bitch about this aren't I?!) before you go out for the day, under your foundation or alone.  Use your product to 'fix/help' your skin, at night, when it has all those hours of slumber to get in there and do its job well!

~Don't overload your complexion with a myriad of 'do this/do that' products; your skin won't know what's expected of it and is liable to just freak out and erupt!  Toners are fun and feel good, but they're not dermal-y very necessary.  A non-drying wash, like Cetaphil, in the morning, pat dry with a clean towel, apply that SPF moisturizer (told ya!).  At night, wash your face with the non-drying wash of your choice, pat dry, and use a product with your 'fixer' (retinol, hyaluronic acids, Q10, etc) combined with moisturizer, or apply your 'fixer', give it a few minutes to sink in, then your moisturizer.  THAT is a great basic daily routine, and it's easy to make a habit!  There is too much of a good thing when it comes to overapplying skin products!

~Get at least 7 hours of sleep.  Schedule them for yourself.  Sleep is important for all of your skin, from head to toe, and every organ in between!

~Time crunch? a swipe of eye shadow above and below your eyes, a slick of lipstick or gloss, and a bit of blush dabbed on your cheeks, will fool many into thinking you actually took a lot of time!

~Hydrate!  Water keeps your skin moist-looking and your whole go-to self, functioning!

~No time to shampoo?  Many hair care lines have dry shampoo products that in no way resemble the baby-powder-along-the-part looks of powders past!  Try Bumble and Bumble's; it gets rave reviews!

~My dry hair won't take shampooing daily, yet the ends are still fuzzy the 2nd day... I put a nickle-sized blob of leave in conditioning cream (mine is Matrix Biolage) on the last 2 or 3 inches, to tame the fuzz and enjoy the silky shine left behind....

~BUT... if that doesn't work, I spritz a shine-enhancing spray from my ears down... THAT def does the trick!

~Squirt your happy cologne, you know, the one that always makes you smile, on your wrists (fragrance experts say not to rub your wrists together, it 'mashes' the 'notes' within the scent), your neck, behind your knees (in the summer), and I spray a cloud that I let settle into my hair... the fragrance alone makes me smile!

And remember... there is NO SUCH THING as perfection!  Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.  If you're the one 'beholding' all your perceived flaws, give yourself a break!  On the days you just can't get it all together, just do what you can.  Implementing these quick tips will go a long way, and if you face the world with a big confident smile, I guarantee you'll be surprised to learn you may not need 'all that work'!

BEAUTY A-Z: 'X' IS FOR E'X'ACTLY!
March 26, 2009

Ask 10 women who is their beauty ideal.  Go on-I dare ya!  Ask 20!  Or 30.  Or 40.  Not only will all of their choices likely be different, but I bet they can find 'flaws' in their choices they deem physically perfect.  For instance, everyone knows how gorgeous I think Angelina Jolie is!  You'd be surprised how many disagree with me, and insist 'her teeth kinda stick out', or 'she really doesn't have much of a waistline' or 'her feet are too big'!  What about Catherine Zeta-Jones?  'Well she WAS gorgeous when she was younger and thinner, before she had her kids, now she's kinda pudgy still'...  Etc...  I knew beauty was getting out of hand when I was watching something on tv the other day and suddenly the star's forehead scrunched up and it shocked me, I literally thought something was wrong with her!  It had been soooo long since I'd seen actual forehead wrinkles on any popular actress, I just assumed they either were botox'ed out and/or just quit frowning so as not to make forehead wrinkles.  Our beauty idea is pretty bad when seeing a forehead wrinkle on an actress at an appropriate time for one, stuns us into wondering what it wrong with her.  I can't count how many times, in the last few weeks alone, I've mistaken a photo of one actress, for another, because they all seem to be having the same beauty procedures, maybe even the same doctors performing them?

I have no issues with anyone feeling better with whatever beauty tweaks float their boat.  I have crowns on my teeth and use retin-a 3 times a week.  But it makes me kinda sad seeing everyone beginning to look alike.  And we're so zealous about being skinny now; it's getting way past going too far when models are literally dying to be famous in the fashion field.  We're just all kinds of messed up in our thought process when gorgeous women are being overlooked because their lips don't resemble flotation devices, their faces never s how emotions, and they don't fit into a 00 (and i fit into a size 00 for almost 10 years, until 5 years ago, honestly not trying to be so.  To me, ribcages are NOT sexy on anyone; I wanted BOOBAGE!)  Skeleton-skinny is not hawt, girls!  When you can see your ribs sticking out from behind you, it's time to EAT!  C'mon, be honest, do you sincerely believe that Cindy Crawford was not, and is not, one of the sexiest women to grace the page of any magazine?  Yet she was a top model rocking major curves!  How did we morph into our current sitch? Some argue it was the Calvin Klein ads with Kate Moss' first appearance and the storm of the 'heroin chic' look.  I dunno.  All I know is you can still be slender if you choose, without needing to look like a 12 year old boy from the neck down.  It's too bad Ana Carolina Reston, a 21 year old Brazilian model, did not understand this sooner.  She died last November of an infection caused by complications from anorexia.  A BMI (Body Mass Index) of 15.0 is considered going into starvation.  Carolina's BMI was 13.5.  Rest in peace, Ana Carolina.  There is no beauty in death.

A-Z BEAUTY: 'W' IS FOR WATER
March 9, 2009

We all know hydration is important for our bodies to function properly... 'Drink 8, 8-ounce glasses, of water daily!'  While we know our internal organs need water for proper function, many may not realize that skin is the body's largest organ, and it needs water for hydration as well.  By the time you feel thirsty, you're experiencing some dehydration, so it def doesn't hurt a thing to sip water off and all all day, or chug it when you're thirsty.  Even coffee and alcohol help your daily liquid quota, though they dehydrate as well, so you can't count on many healthful hydration benefits from them.  Hydrating isn't the end of the sitch where your dermis is concerned either.  Once you're hydrated, you need to maintain hydration, which is where lotions and creams applied to the surface of your skin, can come in handy.  Those with hyaluronic acid are thought to especially help keep water from evaporating from your skin's surface.  Dehydration also contributes to fatigue, and feeling tired does not for glowing beauty make.  Water should rank right up there with sleep and sunscreen (containing SPF for UVA AND UVB rays) at the top of your beauty routine!

A-Z BEAUTY: 'V' IS FOR PUMPING UP THE 'VOLUME'
March 3, 2009

IS there a more gorgeous celeb in the world than Angelina Jolie???  I think not!  She's my celeb crush!  But I digress... the point of this blog is not that Angie is the epitome of the walking fabulous but that BIG IS BACK!  Just look at Angie, and every other hot female celeb (even Rob Pattinson, of 'Twilight', had the look for awhile, and he rocked it!).  Even though I've learned to love the sleek sexy shine of flat-ironed hair, Big Hair has always been my fave look for hair.  Having read page after page of glowing reader reviews, I see I'm not alone in my perpetual desire for a lusciously robust bedhead!  Volumizing variety abounds (from a minimal 'just keep from plastering your scalp', to sky high styles), with more products promising to lift your lank locks than you can blast with your blowdryer.  From Suave Professionals Volumizing Root Lifter Spray Gel, Maximum Hold  ($2.99 at www.drugstore.com, or wherever Suave haircare is sold), to Kiehl's Super Thick Volumizer ($18.50 on the Kiehl's website and/or fine department stores and Kiehl's free-standing stores), to what seems to be the reigning fave, oldie but goody Bumble and Bumble Thickening Spray ($27 at salons, online and at stores where Bumble and Bumble products are sold), you'll have many options.  Volumizers have been updated from products that you rub into your hair's roots with your hands (sometimes gloopily weighing down hair, especially fine hair) to products that have the application process finessed for near-perfect application.  Reader reviews hail the holding power of Suave's contribution to this spring's new hair trend, but I didn't find any known brand that didn't have a following.  Big hair is sassy.  Big hair is feisty.  Big hair is noticeable.  Big hair puts you front and center, and every Go-To Girl has the confidence to toss those come-hither locks and get on with her bad self!

BEAUTY A TO Z: 'U' IS FOR 'UNI-BROW'!
February 17, 2009

Frida Kahlo rocked the uni-brow in her own artsy, unique way, but for most of us, the uni-brow looks like a hairy caterpillar crawling from above one eye to the other.  Even armed only with a pair of drugstore tweezers, a uni-brow can be tackled with amazing results.  As a general rule, here are the guidelines where a brow should begin and end.  Take an ordinary pencil.  line it up on one end with the outer edge of your right nostril.  Keeping that in place, rotate the other end of the pencil til it lays alongside the outer edge of your right eye.  That's where the end of your right eyebrow should be.  Now, leaving the pencil alongside the outer edge of your right nostril, line the other end of the pencil at the outer edge of the inner part of your right eye.  This is where your right eyebrow should begin.  Repeat on the left eye.  (These guidelines can always be modified to your personal preference, and also to help open up close-set eyes, or to make wide-set eyes seem closer together.)  Unless your eyebrows look like a facial jungle and you're experienced at taming them, I recommend leaving the eyebrows along the top edge of each eye, alone.  And, after taking a toothbrush, brow brush or whatever, to brush your eyebrows up and outwards, only pluck the ones that look like strays underneath.  But everything's fair game between those two eyebrows!  Many experts recommend Advil or something like that, if you're not used to plucking, 30 minutes before you go for it.  And many stores, from drugstores to fine department stores on and off-line, will have eyebrow grooming kits.  Many even have eyebrow stencils that will help guide you to your best eyebrow shaping.  Swipe the area to be plucked with a cotton ball you've dipped in alcohol, before and after plucking.  Plucking hurts like a mofo if you're a tweezer virgin, but you get used to it!  :)  Also, unless you want shaving nubs between your brows, PLEASE do not shave your brows!

My fave way to keep the strays at bay is to have my brows waxed at a salon initially (cost average is $10-$20), then as the strays grow back in, I merely follow the guideline that the pro has left for me, with the tweezers.  If you're a waxing virgin, make sure your waxer knows what you want (thinner, thicker, more arch, less arch, etc, take some photos of your fave brow looks) and ask them to take a bit at a time so you can see how it's going.  If you're like me, you don't want to end up with Greta Garbo pencil thins!  That look works for Drew Barrymore from time to time now, but in the opinion of many, thin eyebrows do not balance out the face.  They can even make the face look larger.  And sperm brows???  Ohhhh gag me...  Please don't overpluck from your arch out!  Nothing to grab everyone's attention off your assets like a set of little wigglies poised above your eyes.  I'd rather have the uni-brow!  If you're growing a follicular bush between your brows, I recommend waxing, it gets rid of more excess asap.  Plucking there would be akin to torture if you're not used to it.  Groomed brows can really make or break a face.  When you think about how much time and money you spend primping the rest of your worth-it self, it only makes sense to follow through to your brows!

BEAUTY A TO Z: 'T' is for 'TOTALLY TUBULAR'!
January 14, 2009

As in tubular mascara!  Gotta love technology!  TVs, cellies, dvd players, cars, gps systems, remote controls, digi cams, and now mascara???  What a fascinating invention!  Blinc Kiss Me mascara, is the original mascara using the 'tubing' process.  In their words:

Kiss Me Mascara is the original mascara invented to form tiny water-resistant “tubes” around your lashes rather than painting them like conventional mascaras. Once applied, the tubes bind to your lashes and cannot run, smudge, clump, or flake, even if you cry or rub your eyes.
Kiss Me Mascara will add both volume and length to give you a radiant natural look that lasts all day. Only when you are ready for removal, the tubes will effortlessly slide off your lashes into your hand without the use of a harsh makeup remover.

All it takes is the combination of lots of warm water and gentle pressure, from your fingertips, a washcloth or water pressure (i.e. shower) and the tubes will slide off your lashes effortlessly. Upon removal you will actually see the tiny tubes in your hand!

Kiss Me Mascara has been clinically tested to be non-irritating making it ideal for sensitive eyes, contact lens wearers, and active people in search of a mascara whose look, hold and ease of removal is without compromise.

Sounds too good to be true?  It's not!  In researching reader reviews, users rated this product 5 stars, out of 5 stars!   Blinc Kiss Me mascara is available for $25 on their website, www.blincinc.com, and is available in 6 gorgeous colors, including LBD black, of course!  (It's also available at www.beauty.com

I found a handful of other brands for sale as well, such as Sephora's Atomic Volume Mascara, $16, rated 4 of 5 stars.   Reviewers seem to vote L'Oreal's Double Extend Beauty Tubes, $10.99 wherever L'Oreal products are sold, their fave.  98% of the users (of all the brands of tubular mascara) cited ease of application, ease of removal once you're ready to remove the tubes, the lush-lashed results, and the fact that this type of mascara will not budge until you're ready to remove it, as the reasons why they'll never return to standard mascara again!  They cried with it, slept with it, worked 15 hour days with it, and still, they were lash-licious!  Will mascara as we know it become a beauty dinosaur, and go the way of the VHS tape?!   Many online beauty websites have free shipping when you purchase a certain amount of their products; so you don't have to leave your jammies, much less your house, to get your beauty on!

BEAUTY A-Z: 'S' IS FOR 'SLEEP'

December 3, 2008

Sleep is quite possibly the most important beauty booster in our beauty arsenal.  Well, that, and SPF-30+.  Both, actually.  Defininite ramifications of sleep deprivation are only just now being truly studied in-depth, but we need only remember how we feel after 2 or 3 hours of shut-eye to believe that not enough sleep affects us everywhere.  The consequences of life lived in the fast lane are now being documented ( "Beyond leaving people bleary-eyed, clutching a Starbucks cup and dozing off at afternoon meetings, failing to get enough sleep or sleeping at odd hours heightens the risk for a variety of major illnesses, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity, recent studies indicate."-taken from an article in the Washington Post about studies showing the effects of lack of sleep on our bodies.), and the conclusions are quite far-reaching.  Naysayers hasten to attribute results to other causes, but, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!  It tells you exactly what you need to know!  During waking hours, every organ, tissue, vascular system etc, is geared towards running our life-machine at optimum levels.  When sleeping, they can concentrate slowly on repairing the damage of the day and relaxing a bit.  The bags and dark circles under our eyes, the lethargy and lackluster appearance of our skin, tells the tale of the previous 24 hours.  We can pile on Chanel, strut in our Manolos, while the hippest Dior swings from our arm, but if we feel tired, we look tired, no matter how much camoflage we attempt.  Sunglasses help.  But lack of sleep will catch up with us, in just about every possible way.  So sleep!  Make time for those 8-10 hours nightly, put it on the sched just like you would the happy hour martinis in your daily planner.  You don't need me to tell you you'll be sorry if you don't!

A-Z BEAUTY: 'R' IS FOR 'RETIN A'
October 29, 2008

Twenty years ago, Retin A became popular as an acne treatment.  It didn't take long for doctors to begin noticing that, not only did it improve and/or heal the acne sitch of their patients, but it seemingly improved the quality of their skin, period.  Their dark spots faded, including freckles.  Dilated pores were shrunken, meaning fewer blackheads and whiteheads (gross, I know, but necessary to know).  Prescription Retin A's largest benefit, however, is its ability to make your skin retain collagen.

Sun exposure and aging causes your skin's collagen to lose it's firmness and breaks down your collagen.  As you age, cells don't produce enough collagen to keep up with your skin's demand for it.  Yukky wrinkling and sagging, are the results of that.  Smoking is a HUGE contributor to the aging of skin, as well.  Continual research has proven that Retin A, a derivative of Vitamin A, is the only topical medication proven to improve wrinkles ("“To my knowledge, this is the only drug for which there has been crystal-clear demonstration that it works on the molecular level,” said Dr. John J. Voorhees, the chairman of the dermatology department at the medical school of the
University of Michigan.).  Not only is it the gold standard amongst derm atologists in the topical-medicine treatment of acne and wrinkles, but it's proving to prevent formation of some skin cancers as well.  I know this to be true personally.

Pre-Retin A, my bi-annual trips to my derm resulted in 8-15 precancerous spots being fresh-frozen off my face, from cumulative sun damage (though I've always been a non-smoker).  After one year of applying Retin A only 2-3 times weekly, I just had my first derm visit in 3 years that I had ZERO actinic keratosis (precancerous skin spots)!  My tube of Retin A cream cost around $125, but it has lasted me over 18 months.  Considering each time the derm zaps my actinic keratosis costs $60, that little tube has more than paid for itself in cost AND my facial skin has NEVER appeared smoother and evenly toned!  Initially I applied it twice a week, important since side effects can be dryness (apply heavier moisturizer), flakiness (washing your face gently with a washcloth the next morning will remove most flaking), peeling skin (again, MOISTURIZE!), redness, and sensitivity to sun exposure (if you don't use an SPF, it pretty much defeats the purpose of buying/using the Retin A).  (Do not have waxing, do exfoliating, or electrolysis, while using Retin A, you are creating new skin here!)

Used before bed, I moisturize a few minutes post-applying the cream to combat the side effects, and have even increased my usage to sometimes 4 and 5 nights weekly, without any adverse skin reactions.  I only w ish prescription Retin A were available for the whole body!  Products containing smaller non-scrip dosages of Retin A are available over the counter at any drugstore, chain stores such as Target, Walmart, Kmart (in my research, Roc's anti-wrinkle line is most often recommended by dermatologists and skin care experts), as well as fine department stores and their online locations.  There is a Retin A option for any price range and skin type, and it's never too late to begin preventive measures when it comes to facing our dermatological futures!

BEAUTY A TO Z: 'Q' IS FOR 'QUICKIES'
September 30, 2008

There you go again!!  Cosmo magazine's website can help you with THOSE kinda questions!  For now, we're focusing on quick, tried and true, beauty tips that may help you go-to throughout your day!

CROW'S FEET STARTING TO KICK YOUR DERRIERE???   NEVA EVA LEAVE HOME WITHOUT A SUNSCREEN, ESPECIALLY ON YOUR FACE, HANDS, DECOLLETAGE!

PUFFY EYES??  IF YOUR NIGHT HAS MORPHED INTO MORNING, COMPLETE WITH PUFFY EYES, ALWAYS HAVE A COUPLE OF METAL SPOONS IN THE FRIDGE TO HOLD OVER YOUR CLOSED EYES FOR A FEW MINUTES AND POOF THE PUFF OUT!

FUZZY ENDS??  APPLY ANY EXTRA LOTION FROM YOUR HANDS TO THE ENDS OF YOUR HAIR, IF YOU'RE OUT OF SHINE SERUM AND/OR FUZZ BUSTERS!

CRUSTY ELBOWS??  TRUSTY OL' VASELINE WORKS!  OR SMOOTH LIP BALM OVER THE SCALING!  EVEN CHAPSTICK WILL DO THE TRICK!  THE KEY IS TO KEEP ELBOWS MOIST, THEN YOUR REGULAR LOTION WILL NEED NO HEAVY DUTY HELPERS!

ZIT COMING ON THE NIGHT BEFORE A BIG DAY??  YOU COULD SPRING FOR A HYDROCORTISONE SHOT TO REMOVE REDNESS AND EASE SWELLING.  OUCH.  OR YOU COULD DAB A BIT OF HYDROCORTISONE CREAM (CHEAP AT THE DRUGSTORES) TO REMOVE REDNESS.  AS A TEEN, I WET THE TIP OF MY FINGER, DABBED IT ON A BAR OF IVORY SOAP (GENTLE ENOUGH FOR BABIES, GENTLE ENOUGH FOR GO-TO'S!), THEN TOUCHED THAT TO THE ZIT.  ONLY THE STRONGEST COMEDONES SURVIVED THAT!  A TOUCH OR TWO WITH AN ICE CUBE MAY HELP THE SWELLING AS WELL, DON'T LEAVE IT ON LONG, YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR SKIN!

NASTY NAILS??  IF THERE'S TRULY NO TIME FOR THE MOST BASIC OF MANICURES, DO A QUICK TRIM IF POSSIBLE FOR SHAPE, WASH HANDS, PUSH BACK CUTICLES, SLICK ON A COAT OF CLEAR POLISH.  THEN ADD CUTICLE OIL, LOTION, CLEAR LIP BALM/SALVE, OVER CUTICLES AND RUB INTO THE WHOLE SURROUNDING NAIL/FINGER AREA.  THAT WILL GET YOU THROUGH AND LOOK AS IF YOU'VE SPENT MUCH MORE TIME!

THE LAST OF YOUR LIPSTICK??  Q TIPS TO THE RESCUE!  DIG IT OUT AND APPLY STRAIGHT TO LIPS!  Q TIPS SAVE THE LAST OF ANY BEAUTY PRODUCT!

SUNBURN??   UH OH, YOU DIDN'T LISTEN DID YOU?!  IF YOU HAVE NO ACCESS TO PRODUCTS MADE FOR SUNBURN, MY GRAN USED THIS REGIMEN AND IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM... POP 2 TYLENOL... WRING MOST OF THE WATER FROM A COLD WASHCLOTH AND SOAK IN APPLE CIDER VINEGAR, WRING MOST LIQUID OUT, THEN APPLY TO THE SUNBURNED AREA(S)...  REPEAT.  REPEATEDLY.  YES, YOU WILL SMELL LIKE A PICKLE, BUT THIS SEEMS TO REMOVE MUCH OF THAT HEAT... THEN APPLY ALOE VERA GEL FROM A PLANT OR IN A LOTION FORM... KEEPING THE SKIN MOIST IS IMPORTANT TO COUNTERACT PEELING AND DAMAGE...  AND IF YOU HAVE BLISTERING, YOU HAVE 2ND AND/OR 3RD DEGREE BURNS AND SHOULD CONSULT A DOCTOR!

LIPSTICK TOO BRIGHT??  YOU LOVE THE COLOR BUT IT'S A BIT INTENSE?  RUB YOUR FINGER ACROSS IT TO GET A BIT OF COLOR, THEN PRESS IT ONTO LIPS.  LIGHTLY SMOOTH WITH YOUR FINGER.  YOU LOSE THE IN-YOUR-FACE INTENSITY YET RETAIN THE COLOR.  APPLY GLOSS IF DESIRED.

IS IT YOUR EYES OR YOUR EYE LINER??  LINE THE UPPER AND LOWER EYES AS CLOSE TO THE LASH LINE AS POSSIBLE, LAURA MERCIER, SKIN AND MAKEUP ARTISTE EXTRAORDINAIRE, CALLS THIS 'TIGHT LINING' AND IT LOOKS SOOOO NATURAL, BUT THE KEY IS TO REALLY WORK THAT LINER INTO THE LASH LINE.

PLUMP POUT??  NOT AS IN TROUT POUT, LOOKING AS IF YOU HAVE A CATERPILLAR CRAWLING ACROSS THE INSIDE OF YOUR TOP LIP IS INSANE.  LIP PLUMPING IS NOT.  LIP VENOM GETS 'EM UP THERE, AS DOES LIP FUSION, MORE GENTLY, BOTH AVAILABLE AT SEPHORA STORES AND ONLINE AND AT MANY FINE DEPARTMENT STORES.  USING THESE PRODUCTS ALSO BRINGS A PLEASING COLOR FLUSH TO YOUR NATURAL PLUMP-LIP GLOSS MAY BE ALL YOU NEED TO COMPLETE YOUR LOOK!  (AND MANY PLUMPING FORUMULAS COME WITH A BIT OF TINT NOW!)

YOU LOVE MASCARA BUT YOUR ALLERGIES DON'T??  DOES THIS HIT CLOSE TO HOME!  I APPLY MASCARA FROM THE MIDDLE TO THE ENDS OF MY LASHES, FOR THIS REASON.  MY EYES ARE SENSITIVE THIS TIME OF YEAR AND MASCARA FLAKES DON'T HELP.  THIS IS MY BEST WAY TO HAVE MY CAKE AND EAT IT TOO!

NO TIME TO PLUCK??  USING AN OLD TOOTHBRUSH, MASCARA WAND, OR EVEN CLEAN FINGERS, BRUSH THEM UP AND OUT, THEN SMOOTH LIGHTLY OVER TOP WITH HAIR SPRAY/GEL, OR EVEN WATER.  (IT'S JUST AS EASY TO USE A BROW GEL PRODUCT TO DO THIS IN ONE FELL SWOOP, AND THEY COME IN CLEAR AND TINTED FORUMULAS!).  BROWS WILL APPEAR GROOMED EVEN THOUGH YOU CHEATED!

FULL BLOWOUT TAKES TOO LONG??  STYLE ONLY THE TOP LAYERS!  THEY COVER THE BOTTOM LAYERS AND THIS IS A GOOD 2ND, AND EVEN 3RD, DAY TIP!

NO TIME TO MAKE UP??  LIPSTICK IS YOUR GO-TO SOLUTION!  THE REST OF YOUR FACE LOOKS LIKE YOU'VE MADE A HUGE EFFORT WHEN YOUR LIPS HAVE AT LEAST SOME JUICY TINT.  EVEN BETTER IF YOU CAN ADD A BLAST OF BLUSH AND A LITTLE LINER TO YOUR FACE!

BEAUTY A TO Z: 'O' IS FOR 'ORGASM'

...AND it even comes in Multiple!
Ohhhh get thee mind out of the gutter, this is a beauty, not booty call, blog!  Once you use NARS MULTIPLE ORGASM BLUSH ($37 at Sephora and Sephora.com and/or fine department stores where NARS products are sold), you will look as if you've been on an all-day libidinous horizontal binge!  Apply the lightweight and creamy stick formula with your fingers or directly from the stick and then blend.  It's universally flattering formula will  highlight your cheeks, decolletage...  even your eyes and lips will benefit from its subtle radiance!  Its peachy pink color will leave behind a sheer shimmer reminiscent of post-coital strawberries and champagne.  Prepare to fend off the pheromones attacking from all directions as they wonder what you've been doing and do you want to do it again?!  *WINK*

BEAUTY A TO Z: 'N' IS FOR 'NAIL IT'!
August 25, 2008

Mani/pedi's are two of life's little, yet powerful, luxuries.  Yet there are times when we need the look of the manicure but don't have the time, and/or cash, necessary to achieve it.  That's where the long-time nail geniuses at Sally Hansen, come in!  Sally Hansen Natural Shine Instant Nail Finish costs $5.99 at stores like Walgreen's, and comes in clear and pink'ish.  I remove old polish, push my softened cuticles back at the end of my shower (you can even skip this step if you are really short on time!), then brush on this amazing potion.  In seconds, your natural nails have dried with the soft shine normally associated with a spa buffing!  I add a clear top coat (OPI is my go-to nail product of choice, and their OPI Nicole Top Coat Plus is $7.99 at Walgreen's, although most drugstores and stores such as Target, Kmart, Walmart, and salons, carry OPI products, as do their online counterparts).  In less than a minute, I have a beautifully 'buffed' healthy nail glow that lasts until it slowly wears away, over a week later.  Chips aren't noticeable and you can remove the polish with nail polish remover.  Easy, time-saving, wallet-stretching, AND it fits in your purse for faux glows on the fly!

BEAUTY A TO Z: 'M' IS FOR MINERAL MAKEUP!
August 4, 2008

Once things become really trendy, I don't want much to do with them.  Hence, I'll wait years to purchase items I like, because they're gushed over, only to wish I'd bought them years before when they didn't look so 5 years ago.  This applies to all areas of my life, including tv and movies.  I didn't climb aboard the 'Sex and the City' train til its 4th season.  Which then meant numerous trips to Blockbuster to catch up on a tv show I became addicted to after the very first episode, once I finally decided to tune in!  I just don't follow the herd very well; am not a sheep team player lol.  Just let this tv show, that It Bag, this hemline start to become all the rage and I disdain and ignore it.  Many times to my regret.  But live and learn, right?!

Along comes 'mineral makeup' and the powers who hype... and I refused to even look at the ads in my fashion mags, preferring to flip those pages as fast as my speed-reading fingers allowed.  But then dermatologists began climbing aboard the 'mineral makeup is a miracle' bandwagon.  Kinda difficult to argue with those who are experts in the very field mineral makeup made its promises.  HUGE exhale, and I began paying attention to every article I could find, not to mention looking up ingredients etc on online medical websites, just to see if any of the claims could be accurate.  Turns out they can be, and are, depending on the brand and the skin its applied to.

There are numerous brands to be found, from your local CVS and Walgreen's, to high end products found at Sak's, Neiman Marcus and Sephora.  Every cosmetic brand seems to be producing its own line of mineral makeup.  Many extol their 'organic' and/or 'natural' virtues; but there is more gray than black and white in this area.  Research the product at its online website and at medical websites such as www.webmd.com and www.mayoclinic.com, to determine exactly how green the content really is, if this is important in making your choice.

Most important to me was:  did it provide adequate coverage?  SPF? (not mandatory, as I use a daily moisturizer with SPF, but not gonna turn my nose up at it if it's already included either).  Since the formula is powder-based, would it make my pores more prominent (now that I use prescription Retin A regularly, I have to slather my face with moisture to fight some dryness on my previously combo-skin type)?  The hunt was on!

Usually when I decide I like something, I'm off at breakneck speed to purchase it.  End result is that I have a lot of unopened products crammed under my sink.  This time I followed my new 'smart shopping' rule and started less expensive, because less cost does not mean a lesser product, many times.  Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation was my go-to first meeting with mineral makeup.  Took me weeks after purchasing the compact (less than $10 at Target), to not habitually reach for my Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer to apply instead.  The results were amazing!!!!  Not in an 'omg I've lost 50 lbs and look perfect' way, but in a subtle way.  My skin was smooth, color was even, and coverage was sheer, though I could apply more for more coverage.  At bedtime, it was still adhering to my face!  And though initially my skin appeared powdery in my 15x magnifying mirror (we really should just lose those except for eyebrow plucking), within 30 minutes or less,  my face appeared smooth and even-colored.  I was hooked!  Application was soooo simple with an enclosed makeup sponge.

Since then I've bitten the bullet and bought Laura Mercier's mineral foundation as well.  I'll use it when I'm going somewhere a bit more special than Starbucks or the mall.  Both feel weightless on your skin and can be re-applied without a line of demarcation as the day or nite progresses.  Maybe I shouldn't be so rabidly individual and jump on the trend bandwagons sometimes.  It definitely paid off this time!

A-Z BEAUTY: 'L' IS FOR 'LIPO'!
June 29, 2008

You've dieted, changed your eating habits, worked out religiously (or not), yet those little bulges refuse to budge.  Or you have zero intention of breaking a sweat or depriving yourself of good-times pizza-and-Gray Goose-binges.  Liposuction has long been touted as a healthy and permanent way to rid yourself of your final problem standing between you and your 'perfectily' thin self.  The magazine ads make it seem sooo simple, so foolproof.  Yet didja know that if you have cellulite, you're not an ideal candidate for this procedure?  Patients with poor skin quality may develop irregularities due to over/under correcting.  Liposuction does not remove cellulite; this procedure only removes fat.  Age isn't usually a factor, although having skin that's no longer very 'elastic' may not produce as desirable a result as younger 'firmer' skin would.  First you must have a consultation with a plastic surgeon board-certified to do the procedure.  Ok so that's my thought process, but it could keep you from having poor Tara Reid's post-lipo woes, and might even save your life.   Many surgeons can perform lipo, but should they?  Why would you want to risk it when so many plastic surgeons have performed numerous liposuctions and await your beck and call?  Depending on the amount of fat to be removed, and the type of lipo being done:  Your procedure may be done in your doctor's office, a surgery center, or even a hospital.  You'll be given either local or general anesthetic.  Once you're in LaLaLand and/or blissfully unaware, a suction device attached to a stainless steel cannula will be inserted via small incisions, into the fatty areas between the skin and muscles, removing excess fat with a suction pump or large syringe.  Length of time involved is determined by amout of fat removed.  (A couple of methods help make the fat removal easier for the surgeon:  tumescent lipo and ultrasound assisted lipo.  With the former, 'the surgeon will inject a solution into your fatty areas before the fat is removed. It is made up of a saline solution, a mild painkiller and epinephrine, a drug that contracts your blood vessels.' (info taken from www.webmd.com)  This helps blood loss and lessens pain during and post-op. During the latter, ultrasonic energy helps liquify the fat, which is then removed.)  Recovery time depends on how much is removed and from where,  ranging from very quickly (as an outpatient) to a few days, with most returning to normal activities within a couple weeks.  One friend of ours told us that lipo on her abs and thighs was the most painful thing she'd ever done-even more painful than birthing 4 babies!  Another said she had discomfort, but had dinner with us the next evening, bound in her compression bandages.  The moral of the story:  Each body is diff, and so is its recovery.  Once the fat is removed, it's permanent, but lipo is not an optimum weight loss method at all, since many other fat cells remain! Costs vary, based on how much or how little, is done, and where, and by whom.  (You know Dr. 90210 is gonna be top dollar!)  And it's very seldom covered by any health insurance plans.  While it's not a simple, fun, or cheap solution to the battle of our bulges, it is a permanent solution, albeit one that's not for everyone!

A-Z BEAUTY: 'K' IS FOR 'KISS KISS'
June 2, 2008

"She want that lovey dovey...that kiss kiss..." Nerve endings are the most abundant on the lips and fingertips (you were thinking, ahem, perhaps something else?!), hence, the libido rush when the duo makes acquaintance with your romantic crush! As a surveyor of surveys and a purveyor of beauty products, I've learned a few tips about keeping my kisser kissable... As a bit of a feminist Cosmo-Girl, the end results I love seeing on my lips hasn't always been compatible with my lip-to-lip other half. He hates kissing lipstick, while I love bright shiny smiles on my face. Especially in photos of myself. Lip color enlivens the whole face, in my book, and moist lips just beg to be puckered up against! So I compromise. Whether I'm home or out, I A-L-W-A-Y-S keep my lips smooth by gently sloughing them with a washcloth during my daily shower. Slathering on moisture is the next step to keeping sandpaper kisses away. Smith's Rosebud Salve (in Strawberry) is amazing; I keep smooshing my lips together just to feel how soft they feel covered in this product. It lasts forever and costs less than $8. (Available at Sephora, online and many other stores where lip products are to be found) Burt's Bees lip balms are natural ways to keep those pouts pliable, are widely available (drugstores, Target, and Bath and Body Works are just a few stores that carry this line), and in the tinted formulations, I have the best of both worlds: shiny, moist, yet sheer, color! Lip Silk, by Laura Mercier, is a heavier product that I apply to my lips for smoothing, post-lip pencil, pre-lip color, before going out. It keeps my color looking smooth rather than dry and flat (and is available in fine department stores where Laura Mercier products are sold). Never forget that when you're outside, your lips need protection from the sun, even if it's only clear sunscreen with SPF 30 that you apply. Lips are a common spot for skin cancer... and even if it wasn't potentially painful and possibly life-threatening, it's still not a look that's conducive to reciprocal lip-locking. Keeping your lips smooth and soft, with a hint of color if you wish, is bound to bring those boys 'round! (Chris Brown and T-Pain not included!)

BEAUTY A-Z: 'J' IS FOR JIGGLE (IN YOUR WIGGLE?!)
April 28, 2008
Meaning 'jiggle' of the cottage-cheese variety, not the sensual swaying of hips to and fro, as you strut your stuff! CELLULITE. The very word hurts my ears and the very thought hurts my head. (If you have your heart set on a magic potion, much less a cure, spoiler alert!!!) " ... cellulite is not a fat problem, it's a skin problem. It has nothing to do with what you weigh, or how much weight you lose," says Hollywood dermatologist Howard Murad, MD, author of The Cellulite Solution. The fat that causes cellulite is not the same as the fat that takes us from a size 10 to a 14, experts say. That fat lies far below the skin, closer to our bones, and it is what the body burns as fuel for energy. Cellulite, on the other hand, is made up of fat cells that reside within the skin. They can't be burned as fuel, says Murad, so dieting, exercise, even liposuction won't help. (information taken from http://www.webmd.com/)

Septa are fibrous bands of vertical (in women) tissue that surround the fat cells in the skin, and as we age, they become rigid. In effect, squishing the fat cells closer to the surface of the skin through the openings in the septa bands, which then causes the dreaded dimples. Are we doomed to accept our puckered fate?

There is evidence that creams and lotions containing caffeine (or methylxanthine), reduces the fat cells in skin, after about 8 weeks of use. Products such as Neutrogena's Anti-Cellulite Treatment-about $19 for 5 ozs- and CelluSculpt Anti-Cellulite Slimming Treatment by Avon-about $16 for 6.7 ounces-have shown promise. A diet with foods rich in lecithin, essential fatty acids, amino acids, and antioxidants (olive oil, raw nuts, berries, pomengranites, grapefruits, canola oil), may be healthy and nourishing to cell membranes and keep cellulite buried deeper within the skin, where it resides when we're younger.

Laser light therapy, such as TriActive and VelaSmooth, help skin circulation and lymphatic drainage, and though they do seem to increase cellular circulation and loosen the septa bands (thereby un-squishing the cellulite below the skin's surface), it is not a cheap option nor a permanent cure. Cost ranges from $1200-$2000 and may last only a bit longer than 6 months. Endermologie is a mechanical massage, working on the thought process of lymphatic drainage and improving circulation, but it's quite expensive, time-consuming, and may last only 2 days to 2 weeks, and that's after the 14-20 treatments recommended before the bi-monthly maintenance phase!

Mesotherapy. I saved the worst for last. "Some practitioners, such as mesotherapy pioneer Lionel Bissoon, DO, report great success with the treatment, declaring that in the right medical hands, it is safe, effective, and has a 90% success rate." (http://www.webmd.com/) You're rapidly injected, with an unknown and unproven 'medication cocktail' for 30-60 minutes (with 10 of these sessions recommended for 'optimum results'). IF you're inclined to take this chance, know that it's my understanding the process is extremely painful, and even the journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery cautions against it; too many unknowns. Mesotherapy is said to 'melt fat cells', yet no one is sure if it does, and how it does so, or the long-term results of such a process. (One concern is that the fat cells may end up in the liver, not a good thing.) I'm seeing visions of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' here...

I've always liked the dimples on my face. And even though I detest the ones south of that latitude, I'm not ready to venture into the financial and medical abyss of cellulite 'eradication'. Except for springing for the Neutrogena and trying to eat better, I think I'll stick with the art of camoflauge: self tanners and creative clothing. Didja know bermudas are really hip for this summer?!

BEAUTY A-Z: H IS FOR HEAD
April 2, 2008

And that means Supreme Head, by Sally Hershberger! Rumored to be the inspiration for the low-key cool and androgynous hairstylist, Shane, on 'The L Word', Sally Hershberger roared into the world of celeb hair follicles with the introduction of her stylish shag on Meg Ryan years ago. She was the first to usher in the $600 haircut in NYC, which included a waiting list of those practically begging to pay that, then-unheard of, amount, for her signature tousled style. The rock-star antithesis of hair stylists, she once hung signs that read 'silence please' in her work area of her anonymous shop in the meatpacking district. She was, and is, the epitome of chic. Fans from all walks of life still covet her magic with the shearing scissors, and the spell she weaves over your hair's cut and style. Now, those without the current $800 price tag for one of her signature cuts, can still revel in a Hershberger experience, as close to you as your nearest Walgreen's! Exclusively at Walgreen's for its first year, her line of 6 shampoos and conditioners, and multiple styling products, await, for prices ranging from $9.50 to $12.50, bearing names like 'shagg spray' and 'wreck and roll texturizing gel' proudly. You can even go online, enter the product's UPC code, and get directions from Sally herself, on coiffing your own unique style. Quite a deal! My local health and beauty manager saves customers are giving rave reviews for Hershberger's line. Count me in!

A-Z BEAUTY: G IS FOR GREEN!
March 19, 2008

And an A+ in the green beauty category goes to Aveda and its organic products, which are manufactured using certified wind power (totally offsetting their manufacturing energy usage). Aveda's mission statement: "Empowered by its unique Mission, Aveda believes that authentic beauty is one that works in harmony with the greater web of life. It does not qualify as beauty if it hurts any of the diverse life forms that the best beauty artist of all, Nature, created.... (hence) Beauty is as Beauty Does.". They more than live up to their reputation for amazing organic products that also meet green requirements. Their makeup, haircare, and skin care products all deliver, and their packaging is almost 100% recyclable. Oftentimes, 'natural beauty' means the product is not very effective and/or perhaps even a bit 'whew' on the odor factor. Aveda is a leader in feeling good about making yourself the best you can be, without damaging the earth in the process. Aveda products are available on their website and in their free-standing stores (usually in malls), and in some beauty salons and spas. Burt's Bees has me buzzing! Ok, lame, I know, but the product is sooo not! Made from totally recycled and recyclable packaging, Burt's Bees products not only smell good, they feel good on, they work, and they're affordable! They have total head-to-toe products available for not only women, but men and children as well, and are available in many drugstores (and their online counterparts), as well as stores such as Target, KMart, etc. L'Occitane! One subtle sniff of their product's gentle fragrance and you're transported to the South of France... Provence, with all of its unique plants native to that lush fertile soil providing the origins for a company that is now available in nearly 70 countries. Merely entering their store is a sensory experience I repeat even when I don't need any new product, just to close my eyes and take an olfactory journey to the warm purple fields of lavender as they waft in the sunlight... vive L'Occitane! There are many companies using organic ingredients, and many who claim to do so (be careful to see the 100% natural and/or 100% organic labeling to be certain, because there isn't much of an enforceable regulatory system for product claims as yet), but these are my 3 favorites. They walk the talk, there is no animal testing, they provide results as well as any other non-green product available, they feel good and smell divine.

BEAUTY A-Z: F IS FOR FACIALS!
February 25, 2008

Initially, the thought of someone peeking my pores with an oversize magnifying glass seemed a bit too much in my space for me to submit to having facials. Now I'm a sucker for a glycolic spa facial anytime! Facials cleanse your face, to put it simply, and are available at day spas, spas, beauty salons, the dermatologists office, the sources are many. As are the choices of types of facials. You can merely cleanse, and/or you can oxygenate, undergo extractions, and exfoliate using a myriad of topicals suited for your skin type and what you hope to achieve from your facial. The steps involved vary with the type of procedure you're having, but common to all are steaming (to open the pores and prep the area for cleansing), cleansing (ridding your facial surface of impurities and restoring its ph balance), and moisturizing (hydrating your freshly cleansed skin). Depending on the type of cleansers used, like glycolic, there can be slight redness post-facial. The length of the facial, as well as the cost, varies from place to place as well. My glycolic facials are usually around $50-$80 for an hour (not including tip), though I can purchase a set of them for a reduced rate. My face gets a bit tingly with the solution on; usually a fan is slightly blowing to reduce the sting and keep my cool, though the experience is in no way unbearable at all. I'm a fan of extractions as well, however, make sure you trust where you're going for this procedure. In the hands of an unskilled aesthetician, I've read of pain and even scarring, though I personally know no one who's suffered these adverse side effects. My facials include a face massage (can be good for lymphatic drainage, and besides, it feels awesomely relaxing), in a softly lit room with soothing music playing in the background and low lighting. Coupled with the facial itself, not only do I feel like a whole new person ready to take on the world when I leave the premises, I feel as if I do so with a whole 'new' face!

A-Z BEAUTY: E IS FOR ELECTROLYSIS
February 10, 2008

Currently the #2 method of hair removal (behind #1, the laser/pulsed light, methods), electrolysis is the only hair removal process allowed to be called 'permanent' by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the AMA (American Medical Association). Permanency of hair loss is achieved by the electrolysis needle being sent down the hair follicle til it reaches the cells responsible for hair growth, and destroys them. Discomfort is common, though tolerable, especially when a topical anesthetic cream is used first to numb the area. Tiny scars can form where the needle is inserted, though these usually heal without being noticeable; unless you have darker skin, when hyper-pigmentation (light patches and/or spotting) and keloids (scar tissue) can occur. Electrolysis isn't recommended for darker skin, for these reasons. An average cost of $40-$90 per sesh, with 10-25 sessions (or more, but each last usually 5-10 minutes) necessary for each area treated, means you should be pretty committed to permanent hair loss in order to tolerate the time and expense. The seemingly only good side? Permanent hair removal! I have a friend who spent a couple of years having her dark hair removed from her pale arms, legs, face and bikini area. Even though it was time and cost intensive, she said she'd readily do so again. My bikini waxer had her bikini line done; she raves it's the best personal grooming thing she's ever done. I think I'll stick to waxing, Tweezerman, and good ol' Daisy razors, although there are some hair issues going on 'round my chin that... hmmmmm....

BEAUTY A-Z: D IS FOR 'DERMABLEND'!
February 8, 2008

Very few of us have flawless skin, without airbrushing or Photoshop. For those of us whom nature has not blessed with skin like the kiss from a rose, Dermablend has been the go-to product for pretty much any dermal dilemma, for over 25 years. If your regular beauty product (foundation, concealer, powder) won't hide your beauty blip, Dermablend is pretty much a guarantee, to do so, literally head to toe. From a smattering of freckles you don't get along with, to skin conditions such as rosacea, to scars from burns or injuries, to uneven skin from 'age spots', Dermablend will have you smiling a sigh of relief in no time. Reader reviews of this product are often accompanied by before and after photos, and enthusiastic testimonies of 'life-saving' skin miracles. Many users rely on only the concealer, insisting they no longer need foundation with a dab here and there. I thought coverage this amazing would come with a heavy price to pay, such as looking as if you're appearing on a theater stage. Yet users insist it not only hides what they consider imperfections, but that it does so with a lightweight touch. Due to my love of the sun and the resulting havoc it's wreaked here and there across my topographical anatomy, I need to re-think this product, a dab here, a dab there! Dermablend is available at many department stores (such as Macy's), on EBay, Amazon.com, and on the Dermablend.com website. Products range from foundation to concealer to powder to the brushes to apply them and the liquid to remove them, with prices ranging from $17-$32. Check out the reader reviews and photos at http://www.dermablend.com/; you'll not only be amazed, you may decide you're ready to sweat one less body issue, just cover it up!

BEAUTY A-Z: C IS FOR COLOR!
January 8, 2008

C is for Color! In our beauty alphabet countdown, cheek color is a guarantee to make your whole face look alive, warm up a washed out complexion, and negate a wan post-party complexion afterlife! Blush is the biggest go-to rescuer for winter pale and/or dull, complexions. Gel blush is sheer and a bit transparent; I love this look, but you have to be quick to blend, for it often dries before you finish applying! Powder blush is easy to use and to blend, but it can accentuate dryness. That's when cream blush comes in handy. It's also easily blended, though sometimes its staying power doesn't rival powder's. Shading, accenting, highlighting is best left to professional makeup artists, or you can take a class to learn to DIY. Otherwise, stick to dabbing the apples of the cheek (smile, and you'll find them!), then blending outward and upward towards the temples. The salesperson at department store makeup counters will be all too happy to show you the way. You can also check the web sites of popular fashion and beauty magazines for photo-illustrated tips to help you with the application and colors designed to best showcase your face. Or check the backs of the product packages; they can have directional drawings there as well. Any face will benefit from a healthy flush at the cheek level!

You have whipped your body into its healthiest shape... You have used your SPF to protect it from future wrinkles and dermal drooping... You have exfoliated til it's smooth as a baby's bottom... Now it's time to decorate and celebrate your efforts with the treasure trove of products I found online at Sephora. Sprinkle Hard Candy's Shaker Body Shimmer ($15) anywhere for soft, subtle shine. Tarte's Celebutante Shimmer Spray ($28) is a dry non-greasy oil that will give your skin a slight champagne-colored sheen infused with a light coconut scent. DuWop Revolotion ($25), is an SPF 15 and moisturizing sheen-shimmering skin perfecting tint that won't rub off onto your clothes. Craving a silky, sophisticated all-over shimmer? Smashbox Body Lights Glowing Lotion ($35) could fulfil your desire! For a lightly tinted and scented glow on the legs, ankles, and knees, Michael Kors hooks you up with his easy to apply Leg Shine ($32), in a twist-up cannister. And for the holidays, or any glam night out, how about spritzing a golden or silver veil of sparkles onto your shoulders with Sephora's own Glitter Spray ($8), or go all-over (even hair) for gem-tastic look to rock the night! Order in the near future, and you get free shipping for orders over $50, and the selection is huge! Glow, girls, Glow!

Mesotherapy
May 22, 2007

What is it?
A medical specialty that targets problem areas with micro injections of conventional or homeopathic medicines, vitamins, amino acids. Tiny shots are delivered directly into the middle layer of skin that are highly specific to the condition being treated. It has been said to eliminate cellulite and localized fat deposits, promote weight loss, and have anti-aging benefits.

What is the catch?
It is not FDA approved and not one formula is the same. Depending the administrator of the concoction, it can be any mix they feel is right. It is pricey costing anywhere from $100-175 per treatment, at which you could be required to have three to ten treatments depending on severity.

Does it work?
I am yet to hear a success story. I know that the immediate appearance after the swelling is reduced can make a difference. However, it has yet to last on anyone I know.

True Experience:
"I decided to give it a go after my frustration of exercising and diet had yet to reduce my cellulite. The "nurse" said I would probably only need three treatments and could maybe get away with two. She provided me with ice packs because she said it would burn for a bit after the shots were given. Burn?! It felt like someone was holding down an iron to my legs. I was in so much pain, I felt like I was going to pass out. Not to mention, my legs were swollen, hard, and red for three days after. Once the side effects went down, I noticed a little difference, but I had pain through my legs and hard bumps. The "nurse" said that was normal and could take a couple months for it to go away. I never went back, the results were not worth the pain or the costs."

Weight Tips to be Thankful For
November 17, 2008

Ah, the holiday season is upon us.  The shopping windows are filling up with holiday lights, imitation snowflakes, and gifts galore.  Along with the gifts, comes the food, which means bigger waistlines and new resolutions before the year ends.

November brings Thanksgiving, a holiday that is based off the feast of the Pilgrims and Indians.  In one sitting a person can easily consume up to 3,500 calories when the average person should consume only 2,000-2,200 a day to maintain weight.   Here are some tips to help maintain the weight and still be able to celebrate the holiday.

  • Make sure you eat breakfast packed with high fiber.  Never start starving.
  • Wear tight fitting clothing.  That way there is less room for your belly to expand.
  • Even though it is a holiday, do let that be a reason not to do your daily exercise.  Take a brisk jog, bike ride, or walk when you wake up.
  • Eat slowly.  It takes twenty minutes for your brain to recognize your belly is full.
  • Watch your portions.  Eat larger portions of white turkey, sweet potatoes, and steamed vegetables and eat the fatty foods in smaller sizes.
  • Try to limit to one plate of food and skip the second helpings.
  • If you decided to drink alcohol with the meal, opt for red wine.  It is less in calories and in moderation can actually benefit you.
  • Take a small serving of dessert.  If you have options in pie, choose pumpkin over pecan as it is has a lot less calories.
  • At the end of the meal, have a full glass of water to help you realize your full and step away from the table.
  • Try to be a bit active after dinner, even if it is washing the dishes or cleaning up the kitchen.

Not matter what, just remember that it is okay to eat whatever you want just as long as you watch your portions.  Try not to overeat and you will wake up the next day feeling thankful you still have your same figure.

Defining the Diet
May 22, 2007

There are many definitions of the word: diet.  A person’s “diet” is the usual food and drink consumed.  However, most would relate the definition of “diet” to: the act of restricting your food intake.  There are healthy diets, prescribed diets, fad diets, and crash diets.  When researching for the best “diet” out there, I went to Amazon.com and typed in “weight loss.” It came back with 40,947 results in books alone.  Well, I decided to narrow my search to “diet books.”  It came back with 6001 results.  If there are so many choices out there, how do we know which one is best for us? Okay, so I am not a nutritionist, dietician, or a doctor.  My information is solely based off my experience and own personal research.

I have not been blessed with the perfect body, whatever that may be.  Growing up I was very skinny and most of my classmates thought I was starving myself.  I loved food… actually love food.  I never starved myself; I just had an extremely high metabolism. I was athletic, once being in track and gymnastics, and weight lifted three days a week.

When I went away to college all of that somehow decided to stay home.  I gained the “freshman 15,” but I decided to pack on extra 10 lbs.  It might have had something to do with a diet consisting of pizza, chocolate, soda, and chips with cheese dip.  I became obsessed about it, and I was determined to lose the weight.  My diet consisted of Slim-Fast and Dexetrim. I lost the weight but destroyed my body in the process. The only good thing I did was stop drinking soda.  I hated exercising so I basically lost it all by depriving by body’s needs. The weight stayed off for about one year.  When I gain some back, I freaked out and immediately when on the Atkins Diet.  Okay, not only did not lose the weight, but I deprived of my favorite source of fuel, carbs, which ending up causing me a few extra pounds when I binged on making it up.

I eventually lost some weight once I cut back my calories less than 1500 a day.  Again, not smart, a woman’s body calorie intake must never go below a required amount. With every diet and every restriction I put on my body, my metabolism slowed down.  This meant every time I lost weight it would become harder for me to keep it off.  I still never exercised, but I bartended thinking that was my exercise for the day.

After I broke up with my ex, I discovered the “drinking, late-night eating, and fast food” diet. I never slept because I was out partying all night long and then having to work or go to school the next day. If I slept for 3 hours a night, I was good.  Of course, I gained weight to say the least, but I had major high and very low spurts of energy.  My concentration was off and I hardly passed my classes.  I had a wake-up call when my boss sat me down and was concerned about my job performance.  I strive to a good job and make others proud; to be talked to was not okay with me.  I immediately stopped eating fast food and stopped drinking, which in turn eliminated my late-night eating.

I stopped it all as I went full force into the “South Beach Diet.”  It was more laid back than Atkins, and the tough process was only fourteen days and I knew I could do it.  I started taking diet pills to help with my cravings.  The first three days were the worst but after it was smooth sailing.  I started exercising as well with simple sit-ups and leg lifts.  I started losing weight very slowly, and I was frustrated because I wanted to go faster.  I weighed myself every day. I somehow thought if my body was perfect, my life would be too.  I have had many unpleasant experiences in my life that were out of my control.  I guess my therapy for handling them was learning to control the one thing I could: my appearance. I continued on the diet, but to speed up the process I started becoming bulimic.  It was not a consistent thing, it was basically whenever I cheated, and I would throw up to program my mind not to eat.  It came down to basically a scoop of peanut butter in the morning and a piece of chicken or burger with no bun in the evening.  I thought I was finally good. I got my body to where it needed to be and I continued on my process to it keep up.

Everything blew up in my face when I moved.  Traveling in a car for over three days and adhering to the party scene of Las Vegas, my diet went completely out the window.  I stopped throwing up because I had roommates and I did not want them to know I did it. I started gaining back the weight and starting losing my confidence.  I continued to watch the numbers on the scale go up.  I never gained back all that I lost, but I gain enough to know that my body was not suitable for “Vegas” terms.  The pressures of being thin and beautiful came with every time I filled out an application.  I had seven years bartending experience, but that never matter.  My picture would be taken before my application was ever considered.  I had never been in a situation where my measurements were taken for a job before I was hired.  It was time to get back on the diet road, but this time I was determined to do it right.  I was sick my body fluctuating back and forth.  I just wanted to be healthy.

The first thing I did was join a gym.  I had to get back in the regime of exercising and feeling good about doing it.  I took up Pilates and Yoga, and signed up with a personal training.  I started analyzing my history of weight gain and losing.  I realized that the best time it worked was when I would cut out alcohol, high sugar and processed items, and high fat foods.  I remembered a long time ago reading about how your metabolism determines what your body processes better than others.  I studied what it takes the body to lose weight.  I figured out what my body needs to burn for calories everyday and subtracted it by 500.  I started eating healthier, but still allowed for the good stuff.  When I saw the numbers on my scale not going down, I threw my scale away.  I no longer wanted to what I weighed, I just wanted my clothes to fit good and feel good.  I read that with my figure, which is an hourglass, the numbers will never be accurate.  My body distributes weight evenly so even I lose it, it will be only shown by inches not by numbers on a scale.  Also, working out and gaining muscle mass, gives the numbers on the scale a boost.  I was gaining weight, muscle weight, not fat.

I did get a job at a fabulous pool.  The woman that interview me did hire me based off experience and did not take my picture, so I have to be fair to say not everyone is the same in Vegas.  I loved my job and I continued to work on my weight throughout the summer.

I can say now I am happy with my body, but I am still very conscious of how I maintain it. I still freak out if I do not go to the gym, which I pretty much go everyday, and I still test every new product that comes out for cellulite and to get off that extra inch.  But now, I eat what I what and I am not running for a bathroom whenever I am done.  I am proud of what I have accomplished and if jobs want my picture, I will provide it with a smile.  If they do not like what they see, it is their lost.  No one can say what makes a woman’s body perfect, there is not even a clear definition of the word.  If there was, it should be simply being satisfied and proud of whom you are and learn to embrace.  Walk with your head up high no matter who is looking because at the end of the day, the only person looking back at you is yourself in the mirror.

Protein Type:

Tend to have strong appetites and have a hard time feeling satisfied. Usually crave salty foods unless you consume too many carbs, which leaves you craving for sugar. You mostly either feel depressed with low energy or anxious or shaky where as eating can make you feel better.

What you can generally eat:

Protein: 40%, Fats: 30 %, Carbs 30%

Eat a sufficient protein at every meal and incorporate in every snack. You are allowed to consume heavier proteins such as red meat, poultry, and natural high fat.

Watch your carbs, and try to cut out bread in your diet. Stick to whole grains only, and nonstarchy foods like spinach, cauliflower, or celery. If you choose to eat carbs, make sure you pair it up with protein, such as bread with butter. Also avoid high sugar fruit and gravitate more towards apples, pears, avocados, or olives

You will do with a high natural fat such as butter, dairy, and nuts. Try to avoid processed foods like margarine.

Things to be careful with:

Alcohol can be very hard for this body type. It reek havoc on your metabolism causing high weight gain. Mixing alcohol with high sugar juices makes it even worse. If you drink, do so in moderation and try to stick to drinks with diet sodas or water.

Fruit juices are just as bad as alcohol especially ones from concentrated citrus fruit.

Caffeine is also bad for this body type, at which if you choose to drink coffee or caffeinated beverages it is best to pair it up with protein.

What diets might work for your type*:

Please remember this is just based off personal opinion, and you should always consult a doctor before starting any diet. Make sure you know all the facts as your current health condition before starting a diet. Also, it is important to incorporate exercise as part of your weight loss plan and to be realistic, there is never a quick fix, you must want to work for it and achieve your goal.

The South Beach Diet, Atkins, Low GI Diet, Sonoma Diet, Mediterranean Diet, Omega Diet, The Fat Smash Diet

Carb Type:

It does not take much to make you feel full. You handle sweets well, unless you have low blood sugar, however can tend to overdue them. Often lean with aggressive, ambitious, motivated personalities. Steady energy, but usually feels like they need caffeine to start their day.

What you can generally eat:

Carbs: 60%, Protein: 25%, Fats: 15%

Low-fat proteins are best for your type of diet such as turkey, chicken breasts, or ham. It is still important to have it apart of every meal, but not with a snack. Also, low-fat dairy is best, and some may to restrict for their diet all together.

Even though your body can handle starchy veggies and fruit, be careful on how much you consume. Try avoid potatoes with bread, but corn with bread would not be that bad.

You may snack on carbs alone, just make sure not overdose. You will know when you start craving sweets. Be careful with snaking on items such as nuts and high protein items, you can enjoy just make sure it is in moderation.

You are allowed bread in your diet, but try to avoid white or refined breads, and go easy on the butter.

Things to be careful with:

This metabolism type is lucky it handles most types of food very well. Even though alcohol is damaging to all body types, carb types handle it best.

High fat foods can have serious effects on this type of metabolism. It does not mean no fat, just make sure it is low amounts

Caffeine is tolerated well with this type, but also watch the intake. Too much can cause exhaustion and addiction. It is counterproductive to this type, meaning it can give the opposite effect.

Combination Type:

These types tend to fall between the two. You can be Combo Type 1, which means your characteristics do not seem to be either Protein or Carb, or Combo Type 2 where you have strong characteristics of both, which means you can switch off between the two. Type 1 usually do not have big appetites but will feel hungry during scheduled mealtimes. Type 2 can be extremely hungry at times, but at other times feel fine and can end up skipping meals. Both types usually do not have cravings, but can develop a "sweet tooth" if not eating correctly. When eating restricted or one-sided diets, they tend to develop weight problems.

What you can generally eat:

Carbs: 50%, Proteins: 30%, Fats: 20%

You should try to have protein with every snake and meal

You can consume the same items out of both types, but watch your fat intake. If you are eating high protein, it most likely will cover your fat intake.

You can also have bread with the combo type, but only in moderation and avoid refined, white bread.

Low GI or medium GI is best for this type so it best to track it if possible.

Things to be careful with:

Alcohol is just as bad with this type as Protein Type. It can cause blood sugar imbalances and increased fat storage, so again, moderation is key.

High gluten grains in breads, sourdough or sprouted breads are best.

Caffeine is counterproductive so make sure if you must consume it, always take it with some protein.

YOGA POSE: Tree (for balance)

  • To keep helping you create a full yoga work-out it's time to add a simple balancing pose.
  • Balancing should come at the end of your work-out when your heart rate is up and it is time to come back down to the mat.
  • It might be a good idea to do Pigeon before Tree to help stretch out the hips.
  • To do the balance all you have to do is shift your weight to one foot and walk the other up your leg as far as you are comfortable.
  • Make sure you don't use your knee cap as a spot to press the balancing foot into.
  • Find a focal point.
  • Keep your hips straight.
  • And focus on your breathing while maintaining the pose.
  • Your hands can be anywhere.
  • Above you in prayer, or in at your chest.
  • Play around with what feels best.

YOGA POSE: Plow

  • Plow is a great back stretch. All the guidelines that apply for Shoulder Stand are the same for Plow.
  • Once in Shoulder Stand let one leg fall over your head at a time.
  • If your feet don't touch the ground or you want to bend your knees you need to keep your hands supporting your back.
  • If you want to intensify the stretch bring your hands behind your back and clasp them.
  • Make sure the weight stays evenly distributed between your shoulder blades. Keep your neck in line with your spine don't look from side to side.

YOGA POSE: Shoulder Stand

  • You want to start on your back with your feet flat on the floor and elbows on the ground.
  • Your hands are facing the sky and ready to catch your hips.
  • Take a deep breath and as you exhale roll your hips up into your hands.
  • Walk your hands as far down your back as you can.
  • Keep your hands supporting your back. Your weight should be evenly distrubted between your shoulder blades.
  • Do not look from side to side, keep your neck in line with your spine. You want to feel as if you are standing on the ceiling.

Yoga Position: Seated Pidegon

This is a great outer hip/glute stretch and so much easier to explain in written form than the original pidegon. I recommend sitting up against a wall to insure that your back is flat.

  • start by bringing the right ankle above the left knee. To intensify the stretch you can move the left foot in towards your sit bones, also make sure that you are pushing the right knee away from you to maximize the stretch and for correct form.
  • After you are done just switch to the other side.

We all tend to carry a lot of stress in this area of our body so make sure you breath deeply while performing the stretch.

Breathing should be done in and out through the nose, but if you aren't practiced in yoga breathing, then breathe however your body feels best.

Hold for at least five full slow breaths.

If you feel one hip is tighter than the other you may want to repeat that side or hold for a longer period of
time.

YOGA POSE: Warrior Two

  • Start in Down Dog for a warm-up.
  • Take in four to five full breaths before beginning or until your body feels ready to go.
  • Next move onto Warrior One.
  • From Warrior One you will take a deep breath and on the exhale shift your hips so that they are now facing to the side as opposed to in front of you.
  • Your footing should stay the same, though if you want to cheat the back toe out a little that is perfectly acceptable.
  • Your arms will simultaneously extend down parallel to the floor.
  • Your gaze is over the the front fingertips. Feel free to flow through Warrior One and Warrior Two to be aware of the positioning in your hips.
  • After return to Down Dog before continuing to the other side.

    YOGA POSE: Gorilla

This pose is an extreme hamstring stretch. It should be done preferably after the ligaments are already warmed-up. It's alot like a normal forward fold.

    • Stand with feet two fists width distance apart.
    • Then bend forward at the hips letting your back melt down towards the ground.
    • From there take a deep breath and bend at the knees.
    • Flip the palms to face the sky and place them under your feet to where-ever you feel best.
    • Breathing with deep and fluid breath you'll want to try to straighten your knees as much as it's comfortable.
    • If full Gorilla is too intense you can always use the modification.
Instead of walking the hands under the feet.
    • Wrap peace fingers around the big toes and pop elbows out to the side pulling your body downwards.
    • Hold pose for ten to fifteen full and fluid breaths. Repeat if necessary.

    YOGA POSE: Down Dog

Your goal is to make a V with your body.

    • A great way to come into this position is starting from Up Dog.
    • Then just curl the toes under and push yourself into the V.
    • Palms should be flat on the floor and thumbs about two to four inches apart.
    • Feet are hips width distance apart and the heels are slightly off the floor.
    • Once to this point in the pose you want to work to relax your neck by dropping the head and releasing your ears past your forearms.
    • You can also walk your heels out pressing them into the floor one at a time to help stretch out the calves and help your body adjust to the over-all pose.
    • Breath deep focusing on expanding the ribcage.
    • Push the hips up and let the back come as flat as possible.

    YOGA POSE: Straddle Spilt

    • One way to get into a straddle split is to come from Warrior One.
    • Directions for Warrior One are in the last edition.
    • From Warrior One, take a deep breath and as you exhale sweep the hands down to the ground, placing them on either side of the front foot.
    • Then inhale and lift the back leg into the air. You can also do this in One fluid motion. By sweeping the hands down and just kicking up the back foot.
    • Once the back foot is in the air work to lift the foot as high as you can.
    • Drop the nose towards the toes lengthening your back. Make sure to breath fluidly, the pose requires balance and flexibility.
    • You should feel the stretch in the hamstring of the supporting leg. Also make sure the supporting leg is straight and solid.
    • If you need to bend the knee or your hands don't come to the floor you might not be ready for this pose.

    Pilates: Mermaids and Hips Dips

Let's work those obliques! This is just a little super set you can get creative with. I will explain each exercise first and then how you can implement them.

    • Mermaids: Are done with the legs jack-knifed out. That means you extend the feet slightly in front of you.
    • As you do the exercise you do not want to lean back into your hip, some people tend to do this in order to get their feet higher in the air. That is not the goal!
    • You want to isolate the obliques with tight controlled movements by lifting both feet into the air simultaneously. The upper body should not be moving. If it is, you are trying to lift your feet to high.
    • Hip Dips: You have to make a straight line with your body otherwise known as a side plank. There are two ways of doing this exercise, one is just a little bit harder.
    • First, stack the shoulder over the wrist (so important) then lift your body into a straight side plank.
    • Keep the elbow locked, do not bend, and dip the hip as you exhale, inhale on the way up.
    • Pilate breathing is inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth to work the diaphragm. If you find these to be to strenuous, then you might want to take the modification. Always do what feels best to your body!
    • All you have to do is drop down onto your elbow, shoulder is still stacked over the elbow and all the same rules apply. Make a straight line with your body and the breathing is also the same.

The fun part is you can do these as creatively as you want. You can do 3 sets of mermaids with 10-15 reps straight and then do the same with your hip dips or you can switch back and forth. The only real requirement is that you challenge yourself. Also feel free to add any crunches or ab work-outs you already know. The great thing about this little workout is you can do it at home or on the go.

    PILATES EXERCISE: Heel drops

      • Lay flat on your back with an imprinted spine.
      • This means you push your navel towards the ground so there is no room to move your hand under your back.
      • Raise your legs to a 90` angle from your spine.
      • Make sure not to let the hips move or come up off the ground.
      • As you exhale begin to drop the heels and only drop them down so far that the spine will stay flat on the ground.
      • If your back begins to invert your core is not strong enough to support you and you should decrease your drop.
      • As you lift your legs inhale until you are back at 90`.
      • All movement should be done slowly and with control in flow with the breath.
      • Starting with 3 sets and repetitions of 10 will be challenging at first.
      • Feel free to up the reps as your abdominal becomes stronger

    PILATES EXERCISE: Hip Tilts

      • There are two ways you can place your hands for this exercise.
      • The basic and easier way is just to leave the hands face down on the floor by your hips. This is the best choise especially if you are feeling any strain in the low back.
      • The other is to clasp the hands behind your back and then pull the shoulder blades together to get a higher rise in the hips.
      • After you have figured out what feels best for your body you just lift the hips into the air exhaling as you push up.
      • As you drop the hips back down to the ground inhale but don't release the pose.
      • Your hips should still be a couple of inches off of the floor.
      • You should do these at a repetition of fifteen
      • For more of a challenge on the last one you can hold the pose with your hips pushed up in the air for ten to fifteen seconds.
You should feel a good burn in your glutes and maybe even quadricep region.
      • Doing these three to five sets should do the job.

    PILATES EXERCISE: GLUTE ROLLS

Lets add on a Pilates exercise to our recently learned Down Dog pose.

    • While in Down Dog you can add glute rolls.
    • All you need to do is bring the Down Dog into a Split Dog by raising one foot into the air.
    • Work to keep your hips, especially the hip of the foot that is raised, squared off to the ground.
    • Then engaging your core make small circles with the foot that's in the air.
    • Exhaling on the way down and inhaling as you rotate up.
    • Use your diaphragm to work your breath.
    • Then you do the same amount of circles rotating in the opposite direction.
You might want to rest in between the
      right and left leg.
    • Or if you are up for the challenge you can do both sets consecutively.
    • Also feel free to play with the number of reps.
    • My suggestion for starting is a total of ten. Making five to the inside and five to the outside.

    PILATES EXERCISE: Prayer Plank

A new way to do prayer plank so I am going to give you that option and a modification.

    • The modification for both is to come to the knees if you don't have the core stability.
    • Prayer Plank is when you stack the shoulders over the elbows and make a straight line with your body.
    • Come up on the toes and press away with the heels.
    • Make sure you are looking straight ahead and not down.
    • This causes rounding in the back, so lift thru your chest.
    • Your hands can either be clasped or just pressed together, hence the name Prayer Plank.
    • The other choice is to lay your palms flat on the floor and come into a plank.
    • This option puts more of a challenge on your core because of the positioning of your hands.

    PILATES EXERCISE: Oblique C-Curve

    • Come into a C-Curve.
    • All you have to do is put your feet flat on the floor and imprint your spine into the floor.
    • To imprint your spine you push your navel into the ground.
    • Then lift your head curling into a C-Curve.
    • Maintain your C-Curve and tap each ankle individually.
    • Use your index finger and just move back and forth.
    • You should do the exercise until you feel a go od burn and then repeat two more times.

SCARF IT UP!!
November 13, 2009

I have a new fave trend, which is not only quite feisty, but highly practical as well.  Scarves have been around for awhile now, LUV'em, they freshen up any style anytime.  Not long ago I spied an infinity scarf in a fashion mag; talk about getting my attention!!

A warm cocoon of love encircling one of our most-neglected areas, our necks!  I'm soooo not a turtleneckperson, they feel as if they're choking me, but an infinity scarf is such a cool way to get the heat without the rash!  (Turtlenecks make my neck itch!) You can buy a single circle, a looping circle, a thin circle, a chunky circle, a fringed circle, a pom pom'd circle, a knit circle, a silk circle, a solid circle, a printed circle, a plaid circle, or even a cashmere circle.  Dress in jeans, tee and a hoodie, and wrap your neck in a fuzzy bright infinity scarf.  Kick it up a notch with a blazer, even add dress pants instead of jeans, and an infinity scarf will keep you warm AND hip through the winter and spring!  Pair your mini dress with your nee-high boots over tights or leggings, and pop that love ring over your head for a polished finish.  Pictured here is one of my faves, the Everyday Infinity Scarf, priced at $29.50 and available (along with other styles) in 4 colors at: thelimited.com.  Scarves are one-stop shopping for dressing up, or dressing down, every outfit, day or night!

LEGGINGS LOCK IT UP!
October 20, 2009

Ahhhhh, soooo.... winter is fast approaching... Autumn?  What's that?? Weather seems to know 2 temps now (thanx, Global Warming?!), hot and cold.  No more refreshing mojitos post-poolside dip... No running around half-naked instead of tied and tethered to layers of clothing... When the leaves fall from the trees, I feel like hibernating til Spring, and not very much motivates me from my barometric funk.  And then... The magic ad in one of my monthly fashion mags!!  LEGGINGS FOR FALL/WINTER!!  The Fashionistas said 'no no no' way leggings would last through spring!  Yet leggings have a lock on style with not just your basic capri length to wear with your basic gladiator sandals and/or flats (a look I rocked all summer!).  Not as the camel-toe inducing outfits (short tops and leggings as pants) of seasons past... wayyyy past.  NO!  This Fall/Winter season, our brazilliant full-length leggings are topped with all manner of options:  longer tees, shirts, blazers, mini-dresses, just mix and match.  And for the indie-style adventuress, layered under shorts!  Seriously.  IS there any 'pant' more comfy and versatile than leggings?

NOT.  You'll find them at every price range, in every store that carries pants of any kind.  Designers have gotten in on the trend as well.  Vanessa Bruno sells a suede pair of leggings for $1295. RM by Roland Mouret knitted leggings goes for $830. Juicy Couture's options include a $120 pair with button ankles in stretch jersey.  I love my pair of basic black cotton Splendid $60 leggings; they're stretchy but not 'stretched', comfy, almost feels as if your legs are bare, but warm! (All available at net-a-porter.com)  Peruse the stores and the 'net and you'll find leggings in every print and design you can fathom.  But my abso-FAVE leggings, the swoon-worthy pair I saw in the fashion ad, are pictured here!  $20, at H&M, sequined, that 's unreal.  Can you think of a better way to kick it up a notch??

FRINGE BENEFITS!!
September 8, 2009

I fell in love this spring...

Not THAT kinda love!  I'm extolling the fringe benefits of boho bliss!!  Balenciaga first hooked me years ago with the purse every celeb seemed to buy in multiples, their motorcycle bag.  After a couple years of 'should i-should i', the devil upon my shoulder screeched 'WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR' and I revved myself straight to Neiman's for my fix.  I consider that bag, which I carried nonstop for 2 years, a work of art.  I will never part with it.  I still just touch it for the buttery-soft response it gives me.  My binge for fringe has been ignited here everafter.

Imagine my ecstacy to discover that not only were fringed bags THE go-to look of the season (check out Vanessa Hudgens and her JJ Winters Fringe Bag in brown, available at pinkmascara.com, for $409), but they're hanging (ohhhh how I crack myself up at times) around for fall!  Thomas Wylde's fringed beauty, the Ibiza, took me to my knees, and where IS that pesky lil devil when I need his push to part with the $2200 to make Ibiza mine??  Ibiza is now difficult to find, but Thomas Wylde fortunately has now come out with the Nomad; I die for it in black!  (My apologies to Rachel Zoe for appropriating her phrase but it will soon be part of our natural lexicon!) At $2800, I fear I must draw the line, and focus on other offerings (Net-A-Porter carries Thomas Wylde bags!), but have no fear, for many designers (Linea Pelle and Genevieve Jones-Kate Moss seldom puts down her GJ bag-are two more I lust after!). And most stores have stepped up to accomodate us boho fanatics!  From Forever21 to Urban Outfitters to Nordstrom's and most every store in between, you can carry the serene chic, not to mention the roomy goes-with-most-everything aesthetic, with you throughout the fall and winter!!

MIDNITE AT THE OASIS?!
August 14, 2009

Talk about 80's redux!!! HAREM PANTS ARE BACK!  When I saw them slinking into the Spring/Summer collections, I panicked.  I mean, surely not??? Hammer pants???  Again??? Technically, what's not to love about them... they fit loose, so comfy is the max word... they're drapey, so they hide pretty much all figure flaws from the waistband down... they come in every style (from barely-dropped crotch to full-on hammertime)... they gather at the ankles or above, or they don't... they come in every fabric, from silk to cotton, to jersey knit to probably even seersucker (though I've not located a pair of those as yet!)... they come in every, and I do mean every, price range, from forever21 prices to ralph lauren's nearly $1500 pair (now on sale for $495 at Sak's Fifth Avenue) and beyond... they come in every color... they are washable or dry clean only... they are cropped to above the knee (yes! harem shorts!) or all the way to below the ankle... how could we NOT love this boomerang trend?!  For all the reasons stated above, i LOVE harem pants.  Will I wear them?  Dunno... As spring/summer segues into fall/winter, I wonder if this style will continue or fade away.  Wore them the first go 'round, 24/7.  Paired with tank tops, or tucked-in tops or jackets, sweaters, vests, many styles ARE tres nouvelle... Harem pants seem so effortlessly hip and wearable on the runway models and in the print ads.  Still, I need more time to ponder.  By the time I reach a wearing decision, they may have vanished.  In the meantime?  Can't touch this!!

HEADBANDS HAPPENINGS WITH TARINA TARANTINO
July 13, 2009

Once reserved for little girls and Hilary Clinton, headbands are now the happiest accessory your hair can have, especially on a bad-hair day!  Sooo versatile and functional, they can be worn hippie-bandeau style, to push the front of your hair back, or simply as a fab accoutrement to your outfit for the day, or night!  From plastic Goody hair brands to designers like Marc Jacobs, every store that sells hair accessories sells headbands.  Easy to find, easy to use, delightful to wear!  Some of my very very fave styles come from the unique online store of Tarina Tarantino.  In 1995, former model Tarina collabed with Alfonso Campo to create hair jewelry that adhered to their personal aesthetic: "There should not be any rules when it comes to creating your personal style."  Their unusual, often-whimsical, designs were soon featured in all the major fashion mags, along with appearing on Oprah, CNN and Access Hollywood.  Celebs (Pink, Taylor Momsen, Juliette Lewis, Paris Hilton and on and on!), and us mortals alike flock to their stand-alone stores, and Kelly Osbourne rocks their new ad campaign.  (She looks AMAAAAAZING!)  Check out Katy Perry flaunting the Feather and Flower Dollskin Headband ($163 at tarinatarantino.com.  'Electric Koolade Collection' flower headband $100.  Leather and Swarovski Crystals Butterfly Headband, $145)!  Headbands aren't Tarina's only forte; I can't stop drooling over her variety of handbags and jewelry either!  A Tarantino creation will def bring you the best kind of attention, bad hair day or not!

SOUL MAN ~ MATT BERNSON
June 18, 2009

Sarah Jessica Parker has felt the Love.  So have many other celebs you've no doubt seen in fashion mags and the tabloids.  Like Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Naomi Watts, Miley Cyrus, Leighton Meester, Ashley Tisdale, Courtney Cox, Molly Sims, Cindy Crawford.  Etc. And the Queen of Matt Bernson, and the first person I noticed rocking Matt Bernson sandals, Nicki Hilton.  A pair she had on a few seasons ago was what stoked my attention in the first place.  Do I wish to be a celeb??  NEVER!!  Am I glad their photos turned me on to this awesome find!  Abso-freakn-lutely!

My first Matt purchase, pictured here: The Love Sandal ($125).  There were no stores in my state to check them out in person, so I ordered from one of my fave online sites, www.revolveclothing.com.  They always have free shipping and free returns and their customer service is amongst the best online, ever.  I'll have no need to use it with my Love Sandals, however, cos the slightly-padded insole is cushy and comfy, and the fit is as ordered.  I'm lovin' this simply elegant, yet still casual, sandal.  Stylish in any season, with any outfit.  Literally! Hit up www.mattbernson.com and check out his many offerings.  (I'm eyeballing the Nouer lll next...  or the Soledad... decisions, decisions!)  If the website shows no actual stores where Matt Bernson is sold in your area, they have listings for online sites to purchase them.  Such as www.anthropologie.com, www.piperlime.com, and www.urbanoutfitters.com.  You gotta hurry though, cos Matt Bernson sandals are coveted and sell out quickly! Summer just got a lot hipper.  Thanx, Matt!

VICKY HAS A SECRET
June 1, 2009

SHHHHHH!

Vicky has a secret!  LOTS of them!  All the better to flaunt your assets, My Go-To Dears!  Yesterday, as I perused the latest issue of nubile eye candy known as the Victoria's Secret Catalogue, THE PERFECT SUMMER DRESS, popped off the page!!!  It is quite likely the most-versatile, most figure-flattering, yummiest dress I've ever seen.  The empire waist showcases our lovely lady lumps up north, whilst a twisted crossed-halter tie neckline makes sure nothing plays peekaboo with that spring in our step!  Soft ruching in front camouflauges any tummy issues we might have as the cotton/modal/spandex fabric, gently caresses our curves as it falls into summer's go-to length, the maxi.  If you want in on Vicky's secret, visit
www.victoriassecret.com and good luck trying to choose from the 9 assorted colors available!  You can't beat $108 for easy-going and comfy perfection that will see you through any summer day, or night!

LET'S JUMP RIGHT IN!
May 19, 2009

Last year, when I began to notice jumpsuits-gawwwwd-hitting the runways and fashion scene with more frequency, my initial and long-running thought was 'NOT AGAIN!!!!'.  Love the look, HATE the hassle when it's time for the bathroom break!  I still have to get over THAT annoyance, but I'm liking the look again, which may come in handy, since it seems jumpsuits are everywhere and in soooo many shapes, sizes, and styles!  Check out Audrina Patridge (from 'The Hills') rocking this black silk twill Helmut Lang version!  (Photo 1: $460 at www.net-a-porter.com.  Photo from People Magazine.)  Audrina has one bangin' bod; everything looks amazing on her!  But those of us with figure flaws can hide a multitude of sins in a trendy jumpsuit.  A cinched waist takes attention from fuller thighs and legs.  This plunging neckline highlights a girl's best assets!  (V-necks and push-up bras enhance the less-blessed of us!)  This design is classic; bling it up and add heels, or hit the casual scene in cool flats and wrist cuffs.  Jumpsuits are the less-dangerous, yet still-hot, version of a dress.  All the ease and includes freedom of movement, without fear of 'exposure'!  In this economy, you can still rock the look for less with ella moss's wrinkled cotton voile piece.  (Photo 2: $139 at www.shopbop.com)  Wear it as is, or add a funky hip-slung belt to take you from an easy day to a dressier night.  Newport News has such a versatile addition (Photo 3: $39 at www.newport-news.com), and it looks tres chic as is, whatever your go-to shape!  The empire waist highlights what our momma gave us, and hides any tummy trepidation!  Flip flops for day, or wear it as a beach coverup, add earrings and espadrilles and  it will take you to dinner.  Easy living!  For those who feel you must be stick thin to carry off this latest retro-trend, look again, then JUMP right in!
